On Feb. 14, 41 spellers met at the Snowflake Auditorium to compete in the 2024 Navajo County Spelling Bee, with 11 districts represented. Shaunce’ Yellowhair, an eighth grader from Winslow Unified School District, emerged as the champion and will represent Navajo County at the Arizona State Bee in March. Shaunce’ received $100 and a trophy as champion. The runner up is Spencer Whiting, an eighth grader from Blue Ridge Unified School District, who received $50 and a trophy and third place is Levi Talerico, an eighth grader from Heber-Overgaard, who received $25 and a trophy.
After Spencer misspelled “illustrious,” Shaunce’ spelled it correctly then spelled “ammunition” to seal the deal. The Navajo County Superintendent of Schools Office would like to thank all who supported this year’s bee, Arizona Public Service contributed water bottles and the Navajo County Board of Supervisors contributed T-shirts for the spellers.
