Each year the public is invited to attend a service in memory of the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy. The service consists of prayer and moments of silence commemorating the victims of the attack and first responders.

A flag raising ceremony performed by the Hopi Junior/Senior High School ROTC Color Guard will take place following a motorcade of the Winslow Fire Department and law enforcement. The Winslow High School band will perform the national anthem and Mike McGee will add to the ceremony playing bagpipes.

Also slated for the event are guest speakers Navajo County Supervisor Jesse Thompson and Winslow Mayor Tom McCauley. Congressman Tom O’Halleran is also on the bill.

The city has built a park and remembrance garden located on the corner of East Third Street and Transcon Lane. Within the park stands actual wreckage from the World Trade Center. The 14 and 15-foot steel beams were entrusted to the citizens of Winslow by the City of New York and are the largest pieces given to any community in the nation.

This year’s memorial service marks the 17th annual event and will take place at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Remembrance Garden. For more information, please contact organizer Ken Evans at kke2@azstateparks.gov.
