During the Navajo County Community College District Governing Board meeting held on Feb. 20, NPC Friends and Family Executive Director Betsyann Wilson, presented data on scholarships to the board and invited everyone to keep the importance of scholarships in mind when donating on Arizona Gives Day on April 3.

From the Fall of 2014 through the Fall of 2017, Northland Pioneer College (NPC) has awarded 155 total scholarships. Scholarships awarded through the NPC Friends and Family program are critical in helping students work towards their educational goals.

Wilson outlined that of those 155 total awards, the number of students receiving an award was 111, as some students were awarded multiple scholarships. Those students who were awarded scholarships that went on to complete a degree or certificate was 74.8 percent.

Wilson noted that of those 111 students, 55.9 percent are still enrolled at NPC, some of those include students seeking a second degree. “This makes a compelling case for the fact that scholarships especially in Apache and Navajo County, which are two of the poorest counties in the nation, do make a difference in educational access,” said Wilson.

After detailing the compelling data on scholarships, Wilson took the opportunity to remind the board and those in attendance to keep NPC scholarships in mind as they make donations on Arizona Gives Day.

Arizona Gives Day is collaboration between the Alliance of Arizona Non-profits and Arizona Grantmakers Forum that began in 2013. This statewide, 24-hour, online giving campaign takes place in early April each year.

This year it will be held on April 3. So far the campaign has helped raise $10.1 million for Arizona non-profits. One of the many non-profits to choose from is the NPC Friends and Family program. For more information on Arizona Gives Day and how to donate go to www.azgives.org.
