Sammy Harris Sammy Jackson Harris, 81, returned to his Heavenly Home on Sept. 23, 2021, at his home in Woodruff surrounded by family. There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., at the Woodruff Ward chapel in Woodruff. Graveside service will follow immediately. Sam was the son of Lonnie Leroy and Jewell Inez Harris. Sam was born in Macon, Georgia on Oct. 4, 1939, the youngest of three. Sam married the love of his life, Hazel Ann Potts on July 8, 1961, after meeting while both stationed in France serving their country in the United States Army. Together they raised five children. Sam loved hunting, fishing, camping but his favorite pass time by far was spending time with his family. Sam had a smile and a hug for anyone he met, he knew no stranger. Everyone was family in Sam’s eyes. He loved to serve others and did so often. Both by magnifying his church callings and by being willing and ready to help anybody at any time. Sam retired at the rank of First Sergeant after 25 years in the United States Army and moved to Woodruff in May 1983 from Fairbanks, Alaska. Sam then went to college and got a degree while working for Navajo County and eventually retiring. He is survived by his beloved wife, Hazel; children, Sammy Lee (Kathy), Michael Ray (Lisa), Steven Leroy (Jamie), Cheryl Ann and Tony Wayne (Jenny); 40 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren with three on the way. He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie Leroy; mother, Jewell Inez; brother, Leroy Marshall; sister, Lucy Barbara “Bob”; and grandchildren, Spencer Karol, Jennica Harris, and Christopher Hagan. Owens Livingston Mortuary of Holbrook handled the arrangements.
