Holbrook opened their volleyball season at home on Wednesday last week with a tough loss to visiting Show Low.
Playing in a warm Mike Starr Gym on the junior high campus due to repair work on Tony Munoz Gym, the ladies fought back from an 8-1 deficit in the first game, but came up just short, losing that game 25-22. The second game was competitive through the early portion of the match, but the Cougars pulled away for the 25-18 win. Show Low controlled the third and final game, winning it and the match 25-13.
Holbrook was in Window Rock over the weekend for the Lady Scout Tournament. The team played better, finishing third in the nine-team field.
Holbrook went 4-1 in pool play on Friday, picking up wins over Monument Valley Utah, Greyhills, Wingate and Valley Sanders. Their lone pool loss was to Window Rock.
Bracket play on Saturday saw Holbrook defeat Pinon in the first round, but they fell to host Window Rock in the semifinal round. That loss dropped them to the third-place match, which they won over Monument Valley Utah to claim third place in the tournament.
Ninti Pittman and Angelica Uranga Williams were named to the all-tournament team.
After playing in Joseph City on Monday afternoon, this week the team will travel to Blue Ridge on Wednesday for what is now a Freedom game with the Lady Yellowjackets. Next Tuesday, they host Coolidge.
