Camp Verde came to Roadrunner Stadium with a solid 5-1 record and a five-game winning streak. That streak easily extended to six with their 55-20 win over the Birds.
The Cowboys took the ball on their first 4 possessions and marched right down the field, scoring 4 consecutive touchdowns. They were bigger and stronger, especially in the trenches, causing Holbrook’s offense problems in the running game, making the Roadrunners one-dimensional.
Holbrook’s offense was limited to Darren Justman launching deep balls down the left side, which Simeon Shaw would run under and take to the endzone or pick up big gains. Justman finished the night completing 10 of his 28 attempts for 290 yards with 3 touchdowns, along with 2 interceptions.
Most of Holbrook’s scoring took place with Camp Verde well in control of the scoreboard.
Shaw had a big statistical night with 254 receiving yards and 25 rushing yards. Matthias Montijo gained 25 yards on 9 rushes, along with 28 receiving yards.
Holbrook’s first score came on an 8-yard Simeon Shaw catch. Their second was a 16-yard catch from William Kinds, and their final score was a 57-yard pass from Justman to Shaw.
Holbrook will travel to Red Mesa on Friday to face the 3-4 Redskins. Last week, Red Mesa lost to Pinon 18-22. Holbrook beat Pinon 60-6 last week, so barring a letdown by the Roadrunners, they should easily return to the win column this week.
The initial power rankings for 2A football will be released on Tuesday. Holbrook, with their 4-3 record, should easily find itself ranked inside the top 24 in those rankings. This year, the 2A football bracket has been expanded to 24 teams. The top eight will get a first-round bye, while nine through 16 will host 17 through 24. If Holbrook wins their 2A north crossover game on the 24th, it would guarantee them a spot in the playoffs regardless of their ranking.
