Sports for the 2024-2025 school year are about to commence at Holbrook High School. The Roadrunners will be competing in six different fall sports this year. This year admission for football, volleyball, basketball, and wrestling will all be via GOFAN. There will be no cash tickets sold at home events for these sports. Fans can continue to purchase a variety of season passes through the district office. Those passes will be accepted at home contests only.

The Roadrunner football program and Head Coach Paul Agramont have their sights set on big things this year. After losing their first three games last season to Page, Winslow and St. Johns respectively, the Birds turned things around and went 7-0 in the 2A Little Colorado region which earned them a spot in the state playoffs albeit as the No. 16 seed. No. 1 Pima soundly beat them to end their season with a 7-4 record.

This year the team has built on last year’s success, and their playoff hopes will once again be balanced on the first three games on their schedule. With another expected romp through region play, their first three contests will dictate their final rankings for the playoffs. Holbrook will host Page for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Aug. 30. All tickets will be sold via GOFAN.

The Lady Roadrunner volleyball program will be looking to qualify for the postseason after coming up short a season ago. Last year’s team went 2-8 in 3A East region play. They finished 5-12 overall. This year Head Coach Aaren LaRose is hoping to post a stronger finish. The team will scrimmage at Joseph City on Friday facing Page, Joseph City, Mogollon, Northland Prep and Winslow to help prepare for their opening tournament held in Payson on Aug. 30 and 31. In that tourney, they are slated to face Higley, Florence, North Valley Christian and Veritas Prep in pool play.

Holbrook’s first regular season contest will be on Sept. 4, when they travel to Show Low. Their first home game, which will give fans a chance to see the upgrades (new floor, new bleachers, new music, etc), at Munoz Gym will be on Sept.10, when they host Alchesay. All tickets will be sold via GOFAN for home volleyball games.

Holbrook’s boys soccer team is once again under the direction of long-time coach Tony Aguilera. Last season they went 2-4 in region play and 3-9 overall. They will open play this weekend at the Payson tournament where the team will face Northland Prep, Round Valley, Willcox and Show Low, over the course of the three-day tournament. Holbrook’s first regular season game will be at home on Aug. 29, when they host Northland Prep.

The Lady Roadrunner soccer team has gotten off to a slow start this year due to low participation numbers. With those low numbers causing the cancellation of their first two tournaments, the team now has enough players to comfortably have a season. Head Coach Victor Paz will hope to shape several inexperienced players into a team that can improve on last year’s winless campaign. The team went 0-5 in region play and 0-11 overall last year. Holbrook will start the season on Sept. 4, with a trip to St. Johns. Holbrook does not charge admission for soccer games.

Jerald Nez leads Holbrook’s cross-country team again this season. Last year the boys’ team placed eighth at the state meet led by returning top runner Ian Masayesva. The sophomore placed 30th at the state meet a year ago. Holbrook’s runners, both boys and girls, will open the season on Aug. 27, when they run in the Hopi Invitational. Holbrook’s own invitational will be earlier than normal with the high school hosting numerous teams at Hidden Cove Golf Course on Oct. 11.
