A $74,894 contract was awarded to McCauley Construction last week by the Winslow City Council for the McHood Park repaving project.
Other bids received were from Cactus Asphalt at $90,375.00 and Sunland Asphalt at $89,174.
The project will pave the road at McHood Park Campground to provide better, safer access to the campgrounds and boat launch ramp.
Vice Mayor Harold Soehner introduced Navajo County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jesse Thompson, who acknowledged the partnership between the county and the city on the ongoing issue of the Winslow levee.
Soehner recounted an April 20 meeting with Congressman Tom O’Halleran in which alternative funding for the project was discussed.
Further council member business included a message from Councilman Tom Chacon in which he discussed a meeting he attended with the Forest Restoration Initiative calling for action to protect the watersheds in the Winslow area. Chacon passed on information to the council to be discussed at a later date.
The call to the public brought forth Tom Kaufman, who discussed improvement bids for the Winslow Rodeo Grounds. He explained that the total cost, which includes grandstands, concession stand, utilities, chutes, and arena rebuilds and improvements, would be approximately $120,000. Kaufman did not name the companies he received bids from, but did express his concern that the city was “not cooperating” at a rate he deemed acceptable.
Others spoke on the same topic, including Pete Henderson and Tom McCauley, who agreed with Kaufman that the level of involvement on the city’s part to resolve the issue of use and improvement, as well as sale of the rodeo grounds, continues to be unacceptable to them.
Representing the City of Holbrook, the Route 66 Dolls invited the council and the public to attend the fourth annual Gunslinger Car Show and Route 66 Festival taking place June 9 and 10. Events include a poker run, burn-out contest, live music, and vendors and the car show taking place along Hopi Drive. Municipalities inside of Navajo County are invited to take part in a Classic Chassis competition, with all entries to be displayed at the show.
The Petrified Forest will also be part of the festivities as it offers the Relic Tour, inviting the public to see parts of the park that are not usually shown. For information on how to take part, go online to www.ci.holbrook.az and click the event page.
Also on the agenda was a cyber security presentation by the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center. Representatives explained the security risk identified as Ransomware and other cyber threats.
The council also approved appointment of artist Marlowe Ketoney to the Arts Council, effective immediately.
The next meeting of the Winslow City Council will be held on Tuesday, May 9, in the council chambers, 115 E. Second St.
