In just two years the nation will be celebrating the Route 66 Centennial … the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road and all of the traveling adventures it embodies. This icon of the American experience ultimately stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, traveling through hundreds of small communities including Holbrook, Joseph City and Winslow. While much has faded along the Route since travelers traded the scenic exploration of small towns for the speed of the modern freeway, the number of people who celebrate Route 66 remain strong not only in the U.S. but across the globe. As such, this celebration is a rare opportunity for our communities to put on full display all that makes them special and unique. I promise you, there will be plenty of events that will need to be organized, community cleanups, and revitalization projects taking place between now and then that will require many hands in order to be completed. I hope we can all carve time out of our busy schedules to volunteer our time and talents to these endeavors, and include our youth who may not have a real understanding of the impact the Mother Road has had on creating our communities and how it has shaped the lives of their own families. This centennial celebration also provides an opportunity for the communities of the Little Colorado Corridor to collaborate and promotes one another, an added bonus for us all.
