Making financial aid more easily accessible at Northland Pioneer College (NPC) was the basis of the report given by Director of Enrollment Services Jeremy Raisor at the Navajo County Community College District Governing Board meeting on Dec. 18.

“We recently attended a federal student aid conference,” shared Raisor, as he gave an update on the ongoing efforts to streamline the financial aid process. “It was an exciting four days of learning government regulations. To me it was a confirmation that we are doing things well here and on the right track.”

Raisor also noted that there is a student loan crisis throughout the country, but since NPC does not participate in the student loan program, there is no impact on the college.

The new structure in the Financial Aid Office is going well. “We are currently down to a processing time of two to four weeks, and we hope to continue to improve that as we implement the changes,” said Raisor.

The CampusLogic software, recently approved by the board, has been configured and integrated into the NPC system. The next goal is to enable the students to log into one system that will access all the systems for financial aid.

Board Member Leslie Derrick asked if the system would be fully functional for the 2019 fall semester. To which Raisor replied, “We are looking at a 60 day implementation, which will begin in February with completion in April, followed by a 30 day testing in May. We should be up and running for the fall semester.”

A request for the purchase of two Anatomage clinical tables in the amount of $113,990 using Title III NASNTI (Native American-Serving Non-Tribal Institutions), funds that are part of the TALON (Technology to Advance Learning Outcomes at Northland) program was unanimously approved.

Jackson presented the request to the board stating, “These tables will be used at the Little Colorado Campus in Winslow and the White Mountain Campus in Show Low. They are life-size three dimensional tables that incorporate software with a human anatomy cadaver.”
/wp:paragraph

Choosing the Winslow and Show Low campuses for the tables was based on the nursing programs as well as the science programs offered at the two campuses. “The students in the live classroom will get the first experience of a real life dissection experience,” continued Jackson.

Once the tables are fully functional at those campuses, NPC staff will be working with Anatomage on a pilot program to see if the software has the capability of being interactive remotely for use at NPC’s other campuses and centers.

President Mark Vest commented, “We often taken an item and experiment to see if it can do more. If this works remotely it will be a huge benefit. While we can’t overpromise on behalf of the item, we are going to do our best.”

Interim Vice President for Learning and Student Services Rickey Jackson outlined the priorities of the Strategic Planning and Accreditation Committees’ Strategic (SPACS) with two main priorities that focus on the High Learning Commission (HLC) Accreditation, which is scheduled for a two-day onsite visit in Nov. 2019 and improving the student’s experience at NPC.

In preparation for the HLC Accreditation, NPC’s Arguments for HLC Assurance System will be completed with Director of Institutional Effectiveness Judy Yip-Reyes as coordinator and there will be an implementation of an NPC-wide HLC awareness and communication plan in preparation for the onsite visit.

With regard to improving the student’s experience, Jackson shared eight different areas that have been targeted, which included things like implementing an NPC-wide student non-emergency texting system; expanding students’ access to college education enabling them to achieving educational goals sooner; improve the students’ ability to obtain financial aid, while improving registration and payment; and improve external communications with a focus on social media.

Rickey said, “We do rely on technology quite a bit for all we do. We realize students communicate differently and marketing has changed, as well as how we communicate with students. It is important that we keep up-to-date with this as much as possible.”
