Northland Pioneer College (NPC) is trending on Facebook thanks to the on-going efforts of Kelli Freeman who was hired last September to become the social media specialist for the college.

In her report to the Navajo County Community College District Governing Board on March 19, Freeman shared that from increased followers to major increases in group messaging, group impressions and group audience growth on Facebook, NPC’s social media push is getting more and more recognition.

“It has been a lot of trial and error,” noted Freeman. “But what we have found what works has been highlighting the students, faculty and alumni, as well contests within the communities.”

“Last week for spring break we learned how to make videos of our own,” continued Freeman. “We will be doing program videos that highlight the classes, the teachers and the students. We can use the video technology in so many ways.”

One of the examples Freeman gave of how well the social media worked even on short notice was the snowman building contest she initiated after one of the big storms. “We spent $40 marketing it on social media,” said Freeman. “The newspaper showed up and so did 45 people. Everyone won something. Obviously, we can’t plan for an event like that but with social media it can be in the moment.”

The next big event is an Easter Egg Hunt at the White Mountain Campus in Show Low, which include 8,000 eggs filled with candy. “I am really hoping to have 500 people show up for that,” shared Freeman.

The Easter Egg Hunt, which is part of the Eagle Fest on Saturday, April 13, will start at noon and will have three different age groups with prizes. Kids are encouraged to bring their own baskets.
