By Linda Kor NPC Friends & Family Executive Director Betsyann Wilson addressed the Navajo County Community College Governing Board on April 14, with a report on Arizona Gives Day. Initially, Wilson noted she was hesitant to participate in this annual event that provides funding for non-profits and in the case of NPC Friends & Family, provides scholarship funding for Northland Pioneer College students. Her hesitation being that with the pandemic, asking for funding seemed somehow inappropriate. She credited social media coordinator Kelly Freeman, with her change of heart. Wilson stated, “She (Freeman) was very thoughtful and said ‘I think you still need to do it because people want to help.’” Freeman was correct as NPC Friends & Family garnered $26,883 from the endeavor, which is the most the non-profit has acquired on Arizona Gives Day. Wilson gave special note to Amy Henderson, the wife of Dr. Erik Henderson, who asked that people give in his memory in lieu of the inability to gather for a memorial following his passing. Those contributions made up $9,400 of the total donated. With that total, NPC Friends & Family was ranked third in small non-profits for the amount raised and was awarded a bonus amount of $2,500 and an additional $500 prize from a random drawing for their fundraising page, for a total of $29,883. Wilson also praised local and regional law enforcement agencies for their efforts in providing residents on the reservations with the laptops and hotspots provided by the college that was needed to continue their education. Dr. Allison Landy with the NPC Faculty Association, provided information on NPC’s Early Childhood Program during the meeting. She made note of a special scholarship offered by the state’s First Things First, which provides full tuition, course and textbook fee scholarships for all students interested in obtaining an associate degree in early childhood. In other business, the board: * Approved the purchase of Cisco networking equipment under the Arizona State Procurement Contract from National IPA Technology Solutions Education in the amount of $87,381 to replace switches that are end of life. * Approved the purchase of 54 Samsung 55” LED displays and swivel mounts, along with various other brackets, cables, DVD drives, and wireless keyboards for Cisco Telepresence rooms, from under the Arizona State Procurement Contract in the amount of $61,564. * Approved the purchase of 19 SMART Board displays, along with mounts and two-year warranty from CCS under the Arizona State Procurement Contract in the amount of $153,822. Regarding enrollment, Director of Enrollment Services Jeremy Raisor reported that the total FTSE (Full Time Student Enrollment) numbers at the college have reduced since 2019, going from 1,496.00 in 2019 to 1,361.74 FTSE in 2020.
