The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center (ECC) is proud to announce the adoption of APCO IntelliComm, an advanced protocol-based system designed to improve 9-1-1 call handling for police, fire, and medical emergencies. This cutting-edge technology will ensure that every emergency call is processed in a structured and consistent manner, allowing telecommunicators to gather critical information efficiently and provide life-saving instructions when every second counts.

With the implementation of APCO IntelliComm, ECC telecommunicators will follow a standardized approach to call questioning, ensuring that first responders receive the most accurate and complete information before arriving on scene. Whether it’s a law enforcement situation, a structure fire, or a life-threatening medical emergency, this protocol-driven system streamlines communication, reducing response times and improving emergency outcomes.

One of the most critical benefits of APCO IntelliComm is its ability to guide telecommunicators in delivering immediate, life-saving instructions over the phone. During medical emergencies, callers will receive clear, step-by-step guidance, including:

CPR instructions: When a person is in cardiac arrest, timely and effective chest compressions can mean the difference between life and death. Telecommunicators will provide structured CPR instructions to help bystanders initiate compressions before first responders arrive.

Choking interventions: In situations where a person is choking and unable to breathe, IntelliComm protocols ensure that telecommunicators can walk callers through proper techniques to clear the airway.

Childbirth assistance: When a baby is on the way and there’s no time to reach the hospital, telecommunicators can now provide structured instructions to assist with emergency childbirth, ensuring the safest possible outcome for both mother and child.

“Implementing APCO Intellicomm represents a significant advancement for our 9-1-1 services,” said Caitlin Montoya, communications manager for NCSO. “By utilizing this structured system, our telecommunicators will be better equipped to assess emergencies, provide immediate life-saving instructions, and dispatch the appropriate resources more effectively. This upgrade enhances our ability to serve and protect our community during its most urgent moments.”

In addition to improving life-saving interventions, APCO IntelliComm ensures that every emergency call is handled with precision and consistency, eliminating guesswork and improving the accuracy of information relayed to first responders. This structured approach is designed to enhance public safety, improve outcomes, and strengthen the overall effectiveness of emergency response efforts.

The NCSO’s ECC has undergone comprehensive training to ensure a seamless

integration of APCO IntelliComm into daily operations.

Telecommunicators are now fully equipped to use this system to make faster, more informed decisions that lead to better emergency outcomes. As this new technology becomes fully operational, NCSO’s ECC remains committed to providing the highest level of emergency response services. The implementation of APCO IntelliComm is another step forward in ensuring that the citizens of Navajo County receive the most effective and reliable 9-1-1 assistance available.
