Mavis Kathryn Holmes, 88, passed away on Saturday night, July 4, 2015, at Holbrook Extended Care in Holbrook. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, at the United Methodist Church, located at 118 W. Arizona St. in Holbrook. A private family committal service will be held at the R.V. “Mike” Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake, where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Ray. She was born on June 1, 1927, in Harvey, N.D., to the late Alvin Fredrick and Agnes Dagny (Christianson) Schnabel. Mavis graduated in 1948, after three years of nurse’s training, as a Registered Nurse from Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in Minot, N.D. After working in hospitals for many years, in Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago and Minot, she married Ray Holmes. His job brought them to Holbrook and she became a school nurse for the Holbrook School District. She worked mainly at Hulet Elementary School, but was occasionally the only nurse that the district had for all four schools combined. Hundreds of students went through her office through the years. Whether they had a fever, cut or bruise, they were not only treated, but left the office with a big dose of TLC (Tender Loving Care). Mavis retired in 1986, after 18 years. She was a longtime member of The United Methodist Church in Holbrook. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Ray H. Holmes. Survivors include her three daughters, RaeNell Holmes, Marcia Myers and Julie Cole; one son, Brent Holmes (Theresa); and her grandchildren. Memorial contributions in her name to Holbrook Extended Care, 216 E. Joy Nevin Ave., Holbrook, Ariz. 86025, have been suggested by her family. Owens Livingston Mortuary of Holbrook was in charge of the arrangements.
