Holbrook made it a season sweep over Winslow on Friday night. Playing in front of a full house, the Lady Roadrunners saw a big lead disappear in the fourth, but thanks to a couple of 3-point field goals in the final minutes they managed to secure a 50-42 win over the Bulldogs.

Holbrook started well behind a pair of 3-point field goals from Camesha Bahe, and got scoring from five others in the first eight minutes to lead 15-8 after the first.

In the second, the two teams matched each other with 10 apiece. Channing Harrington connected from deep and Maya Francisco scored 4. Winslow’s Taylinn Puhuhetvaya drained two deep 3-point field goals for the Dawgs.

Holbrook extended their 7-point halftime lead out to double digits in the third with six different players scoring 2 points. In the final frame Winslow used their pressure defense to go on a 12-1 run, cutting Holbrook’s lead down to a single point at 41-40 with less than two minutes left in the game. Tatum Upshaw and Yazzie each scored 6 points during that run.

Holbrook regained their composure in the final 90 seconds. Camesha Bahe and Sami Thomas each connected on huge 3-point field goals much to the delight of the Holbrook crowd. Also, Angelica Uranga Williams took over in the paint collecting offensive boards with putbacks scoring 7 in the final frame helping Holbrook hold off Winslow 50-42.

“We played better than we have been, at least up until the middle of the fourth. We struggled with Winslow’s trap, which is surprising since it is the same trap we run. Once we called our fourth time out with still over four minutes left in the game, I thought the girls did a really good job of adjusting to the press and started to attack it the correct way. For them to go over four minutes without a time out and hold off a hard charging Winslow team is something maybe we can feed off of going forward. Camesha, and Sami’s 3-point shots were huge, as was Angelica in the paint down the stretch. I was proud of the way the girls played in the final minutes knowing we didn’t have a timeout to save us,” said Coach Greg Perkins.

“Defensively we did a solid job all around. We took away their leading scorer for most of the game and chased them off the 3-point line in the second half, which made the difference. We really needed this win and the girls got the job done.”

Holbrook had a balanced offensive attack led by Uranga Williams’ 11 points. Camesha Bahe added 9, Harrington, 8; Sami Thomas, 7; Bailey Williams, 5; KC Tsosie, 4; Francisco, 4; and Heidi Bahe added 2. Holbrook made 9 of 12 free throws and connected on five 3-point field goals.

Winslow was led by Taylin Puhuhatvaya’s 13 points. Upshaw added 10; Emiah Yazzie, 6; Kryon James, 5; Ayla Curley, 4; Nalani Chee, 2; and Jesalyn Puhuatvaya added 2. The Bulldogs made both their free throw attempts and made four 3-point field goals.

With the win Holbrook improved to 11-10 on the season and they are now 4-7 in regular season games. They were ranked 16th in the power points, prior to Friday’s win.

This week they will play in Show Low on Wednesday night, then see the same 5th ranked Cougars in Holbrook on Friday night.
