By L. Parsons The City of Winslow has been in the process of hiring a new police chief since the departure of Dan Brown in June. In the meantime, Ken Arend, a nearly 22-year veteran of the Winslow Police Department has served as interim chief and last week, he was appointed to the position permanently and unanimously by the Winslow City Council. Arend has been with the Winslow Police since 1998. He has served in many aspects of law enforcement during that time, including the Major Crime Apprehension Team narcotics division, Special Response, patrol lieutenant and administration lieutenant. Currently, he serves on the Navajo County Local Emergency Planning Committee, Administration of Justice Advisory Committee and the Law Enforcement Inspection and Auditing Group. Arend has continued his education since starting his law enforcement career. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the University of Arkansas Rural Executive Management Institute Course, Arizona Leadership Program Class and the Arizona State University Problem Oriented Policing program. Winslow City Manager John Barkley had this to say about Arend, “I expect him to be a strong member of the management team. He brings tremendous experience, presence and education to the position and again, Ken and I will work hard to work with our community and build bridges, mend fences and move the City of Winslow Police Department forward. The fundamental purpose of our police department is law enforcement, but law enforcement managers are asked to be much more than that. Ken brings tremendous capability in that respect to the position.” Mayor Tom McCauley reiterated Barkley’s comments saying he felt strongly that Arend would continue the momentum of positivity and progress in the department. “He is an exceptional candidate for this position and I believe he will continue to move forward for all citizens of our community.” The new chief addressed the council and said, “I am humbled. I appreciate the opportunity. I love this city and the people in this community, and I look forward to working with the people in this community. Thank you for the opportunity that has been presented to me, I will work hard.”
