At approximately 4 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, Joseph City Fire District was dispatched to the area of Hibbard Road for reports of a BNSF locomotive that was on fire. JCFD responded with one command unit, two engines, and one water tender.
According to a JCFD press release, the first arriving units found one locomotive with the engine compartments fully involved with fire with no involvement of the other locomotives. JCFD deployed one attack line to control and extinguish the fire. Rail traffic was briefly stopped in both directions during the incident for the safety of JCFD personnel.
No injuries were reported and the BNSF crew had safely evacuated the locomotives prior to JCFD’s arrival. After control and extinguishment, the locomotives were released back to BNSF for investigation and removal. The cause of this incident is unknown at the time of release.
