James Greymountain passed away on his 61st birthday, April 4, 2025, in Indian Wells. Born in Winslow, James lived a life rooted in the land and the values of hard work, family and quiet kindness.
Private by nature, James found his greatest peace with a fishing rod in hand, casting into any lake or river he could find. It wasn’t about the place – it was about the simple joy of the water and the patience it taught.
James was a dedicated rancher, a lover of animals, and a proud father whose strength and steady heart shaped his family and community. He devoted over 30 years of service to the National Park Service at Petrified Forest National Park, where his work left an enduring mark on both the land and his colleagues.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Kee Greymountain, Sr., and Eleanor Spencer Greymountain.
Funeral services were held April 15, in Holbrook.
James Greymountain will be remembered as a man of few words, but deep devotion – to his family, his work, and the wild places he loved.
