The Navajo County Public Health Services District (NCPHSD) and the Arizona Department of Health Services have confirmed a death in Navajo County due to COVID-19 and have also confirmed additional cases in Navajo County off-reservation. The Arizona Department of Health Services is reporting 88 total cases in the county as of Monday. The Navajo Nation reported 59 cases on the Nation within Navajo County but Navajo County Assistant Manager Bryan Layton stated that there were five cases of COVID-19 reported within the county excluding the Navajo Nation. There is no determination as to the disparity in the numbers as of press time. The individual who passed away was in their 60s with underlying health conditions. No additional information will be provided out of respect to the family and privacy laws. NCPHSD is in the process of notifying close contacts of these persons and is asking them to monitor for symptoms. If you are not contacted by public health, your risk of exposure to these cases are minimal. “We express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends grieving their loved one during this difficult time,” said Jeff Lee, NCPHSD Director. “COVID-19 is a serious disease that can be fatal. We expect to see more cases of COVID-19 in Navajo County and there could be more deaths. It is imperative that everyone takes precautions to protect yourself and your family from this disease.” As recommended by the Arizona Department of Health Services, residents should expect that COVID-19 is circulating in their communities and should maintain social distancing. “We know that you are concerned about the impact this virus may have on you, your loved ones and your neighbors,” shared Navajo County Chairman Jason Whiting. “It is passing through our communities, but we can work together to take precautions. Let’s rally together to do our part. Look for opportunities to maintain proper social distance, be aware of what you touch and wash your hands frequently with soap and water. And in all this, look for ways to safely assist those around you.” This is a rapidly changing situation, and information is being shared as it becomes available on the county COVID-19 information page at http://navajocountyaz.gov/coronavirus.
