Eagles fans will have one more reason to visit Winslow with the addition of a full-sized bronze likeness of Eagles founder and Take It Easy co-writer Glenn Frey to the Standin’ on the Corner Park.

The idea came about after a conversation between Mark Devine of the Mark and LeanderPaul morning show on KSLX radio 100.7 in Phoenix and Tom McCauley, a member of the Standin’ on the Corner Foundation.

McCauley had reached out to Devine after the passing of Frey in January to tell him about the memorial that was being planned in Winslow to the rock legend. “He asked if we had any other plans to memorialize Glenn Frey. I told him we would love to capture his image in bronze, but we didn’t have the funding,” McCauley recalled.

A week later Devine called back and said that he and his co-host Paul Marshall had spoken with their marketing manager, and they agreed that they should contribute money toward the statue.

“Glenn Frey is one of the artists who our format is built on and we thought this would be a nice way to pay tribute to not only a standard of classic rock, but do it in a place where it can really make a difference,” stated Devine, referring no doubt to the thousands of people who stop in Winslow each year to stand on the corner made famous by a single line in the song Take It Easy.

The statue will be placed on the same corner as the lone troubadour, who bears a strong resemblance to Jackson Browne, who penned the song with the assistance of Frey.

Dee Jay Bawdin, a Utah artist who also created the Hayden Walton memorial statue in Winslow, will create this bronze statue. The cost for the life-size statue is $22,000, with $15,000 to be paid by KSLX and the remainder to be paid by the Standin’ on the Corner Foundation and the City of Winslow.

The statue will be unveiled at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, during the Standin’ on the Corner Festival. The hosts of the Mark and LeanderPaul show will be on hand for the dedication, and plan to broadcast their show live from Winslow that morning.
