As part of a process that began six months ago, on July 14 members of the Navajo County Board of Supervisors reviewed and approved a tentative $120 million budget for fiscal year 2015-16.

As the most important component of the plan, Finance Director James Menlove summarized for the board what he called a comparatively “flat budget,” which he said remains moderate versus the fiscal year which ended June 30. “Our goals are always to provide better services to the communities and citizens, but to do so efficiently and economically, and I believe this budget helps us to do that,” he noted.

Appropriations for tax levies to be assessed to fund county road improvements are a budget priority, along with library, public health and flood control service initiatives.

Menlove pointed out that a Truth In Taxation policy will be implemented, meaning that property taxes will not increase for county residents for the new fiscal year.

District II Supervisor Jesse Thompson moved to support the proposed financial plan, with a second offered by District IV Supervisor Steve Williams.

District III Supervisor Jason Whiting expressed appreciation for the efforts of Menlove and his team. “I would personally like to thank James and his staff involved in this process. You really actually made it quite easy to navigate and go through the issues. Thanks for what your team does in managing our checks and balances,” said Whiting.
