The monsoons have arrived, bringing much-needed rain to assist in putting out the Cedar Fire burning in the southern portion of Navajo County. Fire officials reported that as of Monday, the fire was 75 percent contained. There are 554 firefighters still working on the fire and the Bureau of Indian Affairs was to assume command of the fire on Tuesday.

Officials said that as the focus on fire abates, the probability of flooding increases. The Cedar Fire has a high potential to affect the Cedar Creek and Carrizo communities with post-fire flooding. Values at risk include homes in Cedar Creek, churches, a cemetery, a school, a sewer lagoon and more.

As part of the post-fire assessment, field surveys of the burn area are being conducted and flood mitigation measures will be implemented as soon as possible.
