Billy Mills, an Oglala Lakota (Sioux), was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. An Olympic gold medalist and Running Strong’s national spokesperson, he has dedicated his life to serving American Indian communities. Mills will visit Winslow on Wednesday and Thursday, March 16 and 17, hosted by the Winslow Unified School District. His movie, Running Brave, has been rescheduled to be shown at 4 p.m. on March 16 at the Winslow Theater. Admission will be free to the community, and the first 50 kids will receive a free kids tray from the concession, including popcorn, a snack and a small drink. At 1 p.m. on March 17, Mills will make a presentation at the Winslow High School Performing Arts Center, speaking to the youth about healthy lifestyles and taking pride in their heritage (Running Strong). A one-mile Fun Run for kids aged 7 to 12 will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the WHS track. A 10K Fun Run and 5K Run/Walk will follow at 5 p.m. Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners in the 5K and 10K. There is a $20 entry fee for the 5K and 10K events, and a $12 fee for the one-mile event. T-shirts will be given out with paid registration.
