Alice’s Guy, a pageant held to raise money for Alice’s Place will return in February and contestants are being sought to take part in the event. Alice’s Place is Winslow’s domestic violence shelter and advocacy center.
According to Winslow Community Service Coordinator Roberta Cano, “Alice’s Guy used to happen every year, but the last time we had one was 2011. We are bringing it back because it is a very successful fundraiser for Alice’s. They have raised over $10,000 in the past with this one event.”
The pageant is an event that prominent men of the community volunteer to dress up as women and compete as contestants. Past contestants have included Dr. Tom Greenwood, Winslow City Council members Robin Boyd, Bob Schlesinger and Marshall Losey, various business owners and Dr. Greg Hackler who is the reigning champion. Hackler said, “This event is fun for everyone. More importantly, it is a great fundraiser. All of the proceeds from the pageant go directly to funding domestic violence programs in our community.” Men willing to help this fundraiser are asked to register to participate by Dec. 14.
The men will compete in swimsuit, talent, evening wear and interview segments. Between the segments an auction of “Honey Do’s” will take place. Cano explained, “The guys of the community that don’t want to put on dresses for the cause can donate ‘Honey Do’s’ to be auctioned. For example, if Chief Dan Brown doesn’t want to strut on the stage, he will clean up someone’s yard. The whole idea is to raise as much money as possible for Alice’s Place.”
Other entertainment will also be offered between segments though it is still to be determined what that will be. “In between the guys being on stage, we will have the auction and some other entertainment so that we keep the crowd engaged. It will be so much fun and very family friendly,” said Cano.
Alice’s Guy is hoping to feature 14 contestants. Cano said, “I would like to get someone from the school district, the medical community, city employees, and someone from Navajo County would be great as well. So far, we already have members of the Winslow Police Department that have committed.”
Contestants are still needed. To volunteer for this worthy cause call Cano at (928) 289-1411.
Alice’s Guy will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Winslow High School Performing Arts Center, located at 600 E. Cherry St. Tickets will be on sale beginning in January at City Hall, located at 21 N. Williamson Ave. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
