She was born in Gallup, N.M., to Joe and Lucy Torres on July 15, 1949. She married Alvin Meritt on July 29, 1981 and raised their seven children together. They moved to Winslow in 1989 and made a welcoming home there. Emma adored her husband and truly loved their children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed cooking for her congregation, family and friends, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to others and one of her favorite hands was a pure canasta.

Hardworking, honest, selfless, generous…words are not enough to describe our “Em” and her unforgettable personality. We will hold on to all that made her special to us, the wonderful things she said and did, the way she loved us, how she made us laugh, and the way we leaned on her. Emma fell asleep with the hope of John 5:28, 29 clearly in mind.
