Donald Glenn Spann went home to his Lord on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, in Flagstaff. Services were held Sept. 27 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winslow. He was born on May 14, 1950, in Phoenix, and was a Vietnam era U.S. Army veteran. Donald was a well respected husband, father and businessman who loved making people happy. He always loved a good barbecue and banana pudding. He worked primarily with rodeo associations, schools and businesses in many of the reservations here in Arizona and in other states. He also had friends and associates in Winslow, as well as in the Four Corners area. One of his favorite places on this earth was the St. Michael’s school in Window Rock. He often would unofficially “adopt” young men and women who needed guidance to work with him and learn new ways to live sober and useful lives. He had a kind and happy spirit, and would always greet people with a ready smile and kind words. He was a man of faith who did his best to live by God’s word. Donald struggled through many health problems in the last few years. He met each physical trial with courage, strength and grace. He often related stories about his sons’ early years. He was active with them in sports and really enjoyed camping with them, especially in the Hassayampa River Valley. He and Chris often enjoyed traveling around Arizona and Utah, sometimes for business and sometimes just pleasure. Even on business they enjoyed the natural scenery and wonder of Gods work in nature. Don will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife Christine McCoy-Spann, and their son, Daniel McCoy; his former wife, Debbie Spann of New Jersey, Donald and Debbie’s sons, John Frank Spann (Noelle and her daughter Raven) of Chandler and Bryan Spann (Nicki and her daughter) of Los Angeles, Calif.; his brother, John Spann (Lhoy) of Phoenix; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews, as well as many young people who he would often help to learn a trade. He was preceded in death by his parents, Quentin and Novelle Spann. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations to defray the cost of his funeral be sent or dropped off at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 600 W. Henderson St., Winslow, Ariz. 86047. Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow was in charge of the arrangements.
