By L. Parsons City development has been a topic of discussion in Winslow for some months. During his status report in last week’s city council meeting, City Manager John Barkley mentioned current projects; notably, a hotel property that is undergoing the process of permitting and utility location in order to begin building on North Park Drive north of North Road. “We are working with the development company to shore up the process, so we are ready to go when they are,” he noted. Another potential business developer met with city administrators last week. Barkley said, “We gave a tour to a company that is interested in recycling roofing shingles into products that can be shipped exclusively by rail. They are interested in setting up shop in Winslow. We are talking 50 to 100 jobs. This could be a game changer for the city.” Other updates by Barkley included an upgrade at the Winslow Library. “The library is working on an LED lighting initiative throughout. We already have lighting installed but we will be replacing the lighting so as to get ahead of that before we reopen to the public. That will probably be a few weeks, depending on the trend that COVID decides to take.” As of Sept. 17, Barkley said, “There have been 12 new confirmed cases and unfortunately two new deaths were reported in Winslow. I just want to keep you all apprised of that.” The fire department has received a sanitization machine, according to Barkley. “This is used to kill a variety of germs and viruses including COVID-19 so I know the chief is happy to have that to help keep our firefighters safe as we navigate through COVID-19 going forward. “Police still have a couple of patrol positions they need to fill, and they have one dispatcher position they will be looking to fill. We have come a long way in the last three months with Chief (Ken) Arend at the helm. Filling vacant positions and restoring some type of order across the management line of the police department so that’s a good thing going forward.” Hiring will begin at the city for seasonal workers, Barkley said, “Yes, we will be hiring for weed control. No more needs to be said on that.” During the council members’ reports, Councilwoman Samantha Crisp said, “The police department will be hosting the next drive-in movie night at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, and Friday, Oct. 2. One hundred and twenty cars will be able to see ‘Coco’ at no admission charge.” Those tickets were provided earlier this week. Vice Mayor Marshall Losey thanked the volunteers, first responders and organizer Ken Evans for the thoughtful 9/11 memorial ceremony. “It was a great event as it has been for the last 18 years.” Councilwoman Judy Howell added, “First, I want to remind everyone that we have several little animals out at the animal shelter that are looking for homes. Secondly, I want to thank James Hernandez and the fire department for their quick response when I had an emergency recently.” In other business, the council: * Heard a quarterly report from Public Housing Director Kim Salazar. In the report she said, “We are modernizing a couple of our units.” * Approved a resolution allowing a property split on the southeast corner of Kinsley Avenue and Fourth Street in to three lots for the development of duplex residences. The next meeting of the Winslow City Council will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Hubbell Building, located at 523 W. Second St.
