Navajo County Assistant Manager Paul Watson went before the Board of Supervisors April 26 regarding the accomplishments and goals of the REAL AZ Corridor since the beginning of the year.
“We are addressing Navajo County’s real infrastructure needs right now. While highways are important, the Internet is as important, if not more so,” he noted.
Watson explained that the county has faced some significant problems this year as Internet service went down multiple times.
“To address this we’ve started the Better Broadband Forum involving school, hospitals, law enforcement and Internet providers, allowing them to come together on this,” stated Watson, adding that they are in the process of mapping and determining weaknesses.
He also addressed the current status on the possibility of Midwest Poultry Services expanding its operation to Navajo County. “We all have heard of a potential new industry. We were hoping for word by now from an egg producer from the Midwest. What I’ve been told is the hold up is that there is a cage-free egg movement that is taking place in the industry that requires a different type of environment. Right now they are determining what needs will be required and, hopefully, this will be resolved soon,” said Watson.
Finance Director James Menlove provided the board with a financial update for the county. He noted that county sales tax is down $20,000, or 4.2 percent, from this time last year. “In May of last year we started seeing a reduction. As we come out of the recession, I’m hopeful that this will improve,” he said.
The board also lent its support to a letter submitted by Supervisor Jason Whiting on their behalf for the Little Colorado Community Development Corporation and its receipt of the USDA Rural Business Development Grant for 2016. The letter states, “Much of the land in Navajo County is comprised largely of the Navajo Nation, and many citizens of our cities and towns have been affected by the Navajo and Hopi Relocation Act of 1974. Navajo County wholeheartedly supports our citizens in developing opportunities to increase employment and business ventures in the county.”
JoLynn Fox of the Navajo County Historical Society presents the board with mugs and expressed her gratitude for the county’s support for the museum located at the historic courthouse in downtown Holbrook. She related that the museum has 71 displays and has had more than 685,000 visitors since the museum opened its doors.
The board also honored Mogollon High School seniors Brock Slade and Baylend Stephens with medallions for winning the Division State Wrestling Championship in their respective weight classes.
In other business April 26, the board:
* Approved an over the counter sale of four back tax land parcels.
* Approved an intergovernmental agreement between the Navajo County Recorder’s Office and the City of Winslow to conduct city elections for a span of five years, to expire on Jan. 1, 2021.
* Approved an intergovernmental agreement between the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety allowing for the usage of the county’s car wash facility for DPS vehicles.
* Authorized amendments to contracts between Northeastern Arizona Innovative Workforce Solutions and the federally funded Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).
* Approved a memorandum of understanding between Northland Pioneer College and the Navajo & Apache Counties Workforce Partnership for shared employee, who will work as a career coach and business service representative funded under the WIOA program.
* Approved the appointment of Local Workforce Development Board members.
* Authorized the renaming of an existing road in Show Low to South Cub Lake Road and naming an unnamed existing road in Sun Valley Terra Road.
* Approved the appointment of Lyn Misener to the White Mountain Lakes County Recreation Improvement District Advisory Committee.
* Approved payment of $5,225.70 to Fresh Catch Fish, Inc. for the stocking of White Mountain Lake with 1,000 bass and 1,000 catfish.
* Approved a letter of sympathy to District II Supervisor Jesse Thompson and his family.
* Approved a memorandum of understanding between the Navajo County Public Works Department and the Navajo Nation that would allow $350,000 be awarded to Navajo County for the purpose of assisting the Navajo Department of Transportation and the Bureau Indian Affairs with road maintenance and improvements on the Navajo Nation within the county.
* Approved a resolution allowing for zone change from Rural-20 to Rural-5 zone to allow for the development of undersized parcels in the area between Heber and Snowflake.
* Approved a special use permit extension for Concho Ocho Self-Storage to operate a mini storage facility.
* Approved a professional services agreement with Latosha Foster to offer community car seat classes to meet the Arizona Department of Health Services Community Health Grant program objectives. The grant will provide funds in the amount of $250 per class, not to exceed two classes per month.
* Declared the month of May as Drug Court Month.
