By Linda Kor Members of the Navajo County Fair Board discussed plans for the upcoming county fair April 2, with entertainment director Mina Henning reporting that the entertainment for the event is already lined up. In addition, a truck division has been added to the Demolition Derby. Improvements to the grounds for the upcoming fair will include a new hog wash area with a new cement pad and water line. This year Junior Livestock kids will be polling their buyers at the auction to see if it would be a good idea to move the auction held during the fair from Friday to Saturday to allow for more buyer participation. After a discussion over the collection of gate fees, the board approved using the Holbrook Painted Desert Kiwanis Club for gate operations during the upcoming fair. The board also agreed to host the Southwestern Junior Rodeo Association’s rodeo on July 12 at the fairgrounds, the same weekend as Holbrook’s Wild West Days. A fundraiser will be held for Jose Villareal, a longtime employee at the fairgrounds, who has incurred medical expenses due to illness. The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Martinez Hall, and will include a western-style barbecue, dance and auction, with music to be provided by Dirty White Boys. The cost will be $10 per person. There are still two vacancies on the fair board. Interested community members who would like to serve on the board are encouraged to submit a letter of intent to the fair office at 404 E. Hopi Drive in Holbrook. In order to be a member of the board, the applicant must be a resident of Navajo County for at least one year.
