Photos by Linda KorA building at the abandoned Star Inn, located at 1009 W. Hopi Drive, was engulfed in flames on Thursday, July 28. Fire personnel from Holbrook, Joseph City and Winslow were on hand to battle the blaze, were able to contain the fire to the one building and kept it from spreading to the apartments behind the structure or the vacant building to the east. According to HVFD Chief Alex Baker, there was no definitive cause. “There was no electricity or gas service to the building, and it is suspected that someone started a fire and either didn’t put it out or left it burning.”

The sign was purchased by a collector in California who has plans to restore the sign. The Plainsman was opened in the mid-60s and has been shuttered for many years.
