By Sam Conner Winslow City Manager Stephen Pauken was evaluated by the Winslow City Council in a special meeting held Jan. 26. He had given the council a document listing areas in which the city has progressed, much of it due to his leadership. The eight-page document listed a variety of areas in which there was improvement. Included in it were blight and sign removals, community and economic development, a capital improvements plan, the Winslow Lindberg Regional Airport, the public works department, the fire department, the police department, the public housing department, the finance department, the library, the human resources department, the city clerk and the city attorney. Most of the areas written about to the council were departments of the city overseen by department heads and officials. Most of these will be reported about in future Tribune-News stories. After the departments had all been written about Pauken added a section called “Looking Ahead,” which reads as follows. “When I look back at what we’ve accomplished in the prior year, I am always amazed. During the year while we’re in the middle of implementing projects and goals, it doesn’t seem like we’re doing enough. Perhaps it’s just impatience because there is so much to accomplish. As we say every year, there is still much to accomplish. At the expense of sounding redundant, our greatest challenge remains the same. We must remove the blight in the city in order to prosper as a community. While we’re doing that, we can (and should) make improvements to our infrastructure, improve the way we operate the city, and recruit companies and jobs to the city. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my two years with the City of Winslow. All of the employees of the city have been a pleasure to work with, and the mayor and council have been most helpful in leading the city forward. We have slowly worked with many helpful residents, business owners and organizations who have a genuine interest in helping the city grow. I look forward to even more accomplishments next year.”
