A gift of seven acres by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints at the corner of Willow Lane and S. 500 Street W. in Taylor was accepted by the Taylor Town Council at the June 6 meeting to be used only for the expansion of the cemetery.

Town Manager Gus Lundberg opened a county map to show the field that is located south of the Reed Hatch Memorial Cemetery. “I don’t know the full history behind this land,” said Lundberg. “But the local church leaders have determined that in the 1990s these properties were being turned over to the municipalities.”

Lundberg also noted at issue was the old Taylor swimming pool and a well that is currently used by an irrigation cooperative.

“We don’t want to take the well or take on the goings on of the cooperative,” continued Lundberg. As a result, a section of land, 50 feet by 50 feet, that includes the well will be deeded to the cooperative on the condition that the cooperative will continue to maintain and clean the area of the well.

“The church has asked that the town take the lead on this,” said Lundberg. “They want the restriction that it only be used for the cemetery. It will be a quit claim deed with a title report and the church is willing to split the closing costs with us.

“I have also asked the church to stipulate who can operate this field until the town needs it for the cemetery as we don’t want it to become a dried out weed patch,” Lundberg concluded. “Whoever is stipulated will be able to raise crops, irrigate and maintain the field. They will also have the necessary insurance to indemnify us in case of loss.”
