In an unexpected move, Winslow Chief of Police Ken Arend announced his retirement from the department, effective Sept. 1.
Earlier this month on Aug. 8, Chief Arend presented his quarterly reports to the city council. During this meeting, there was no hint or mention of him leaving the police department or retiring in the near future. The department has been grappling with understaffing issues for several months now but when questioned regarding the departure of Arend, the city administration made no comment except to extend their gratitude to Chief Arend for his commendable 25-year service with the city and wishing him a prosperous retirement.
In light of this sudden vacancy, the city has opted to transfer operations to a third-party, a procedure they have previously employed following a chief’s departure. Meanwhile, the city will embark on a nationwide recruitment campaign to find a suitable replacement for the esteemed position.
