Charles Winslow

Charles Prescott “Pres” Winslow, 72, died unexpectedly, probably of a heart attack, on Sunday, June 12, 2016, in Winslow. He was born March 16, 1944, in Boston, Mass. Pres lived and worked in the Gila River Indian Community from 1965 to 1967, graduated from Harvard College in 1970, and lived and worked at Gila River again from 1970 to 1972. He embarked on a series of interesting jobs in Boston and later Seattle, ultimately obtaining his master’s degree in career counseling in 1993. In the past 10 years he had settled in his namesake city of Winslow. There his greatest pleasure was as a volunteer teacher and mentor to hundreds of students of all ages and diverse ethnicities. He helped many with difficult coursework, and others with plans for after graduation, whether jobs, further training or more education. He will be missed by those students and by schoolteachers and officials whom he helped with their important work. At the time of his death, he was serving proudly on the governing board of Northland Pioneer College. He was devoted to his family and cared for them greatly, and they in turn were devoted to him, including brother Richard and sister-in-law Susan in Seattle, sister Lucy and niece Delcia in Massachusetts, niece Amelia and her family Tyler, Lucy and Bennett in California, and nephew Anthony in New York. These and many other relatives and friends will miss him greatly. Anyone wishing to honor his memory may make a donation in his name to NPC Friends and Family. Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow was in charge of the arrangements.
