Charles Anthony Gonzalez, 24, formerly of Winslow and Rapid City, S.D., crossed into the spirit world on Monday, July 30, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. His battle with neuroen-docrine cancer was quick, but he triumphed over the disease because although it took his body, his spirit re-mained untouched. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held Aug. 4 at Victory Love Ministries in Winslow, with Pastor David Setalla officiating. Additional services were held Aug. 7 at the Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, with Rev. Olivia Gonzalez-Downs officiating. Burial followed at Mountain View/Mount Calvary Cemetery, where Christian rites were conducted, followed by traditional Lakota grave-side rites conducted by Fred Menard. Charles was born June 25, 1988, to John Gonzalez and Charlotte (Belone) Gonzalez at Rapid City Re-gional Hospital. Charles had a rich cultural background, with Navajo on his mother’s side, and Lakota, Mexican and Scottish on his father’s side. He was To’dich’i’nii (Bitter Water) born for the Naalani (Lakota). His maternal grandparents were Hashk’aan Hadzoi (Yucca Fruit), and his paternal grandparents were Nakai (Mexican) Dine. He grew up in North Rapid City, attending Knollwood Heights Elementary School, North Middle School and Central High School. He spent most of his free time at the Rapid City Club for Boys, where he developed his remarkable basketball skills. He moved to Seba Dalkai in 2005, attending Winslow High School until his graduation in 2007, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team. At the time of his passing, Charles was a managing partner of Gonzalez Entertainment Group, LLC, the family owned and licensed artist management agency, independent record label, and recording studio located in Tempe. He was an aspiring music producer and artist, having recorded solo projects and collaborated works with other artists. Charles’ father gave him the Lakota name Hehaka Ska (White Elk). He touched many lives during his brief life and was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was known most for his infectious smile, his generosity, his sense of humor and his compassion for oth-ers.
