Residents and community members congratulated Carmelita Johnson as she was given a plaque and certificate from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development recognizing her as the Family Complex Site Manager of the Year.
Johnson has managed the Painted Desert Apartments, located at 200 Kathie Drive in Winslow, for 12 years, and was given the award based on a nomination by the owners of the property, and letters of praise from the community and the tenants of the apartments.
The property is a low-income residence and Johnson reaches out on a regular basis to provide help to her tenants in many ways. “I have driven residents to dialysis appointments, jobs, school. I help with setting up their APS (Arizona Public Service) and anything else,” Johnson said.
Residents concurred. “She’s a remarkable manager,” said Mikel Monroe. “She really goes out for her tenants; she cares.”
Rural Development State Director Ernie Wetherbee said, “The grounds of this property look great, the units look great, and the residents are happy.” The Rural Development Department at the USDA oversees 123 properties throughout Arizona, consisting of more than 4,000 units.
