Beth Carlson was elected president of the Winslow School District Governing Board Jan. 4. Roberta Hadnot was elected as vice president and Loren Sadler as clerk of the board. Other members are Marian Scheid and Dodie Montoya.

Most of the call to the public portion of the agenda was spent with teachers and administrators from every school in the district speaking in favor of an intercession calendar such as was adopted later. The meeting room was crowded with persons there for that issue. When the item came up on the agenda, the board voted to adopt an intercession calendar that begins on July 30 and ends on May 29. It has school in session for nine weeks at a time followed by two-week breaks, and includes a total of 180 teaching days.

The board approved the hiring of Kayla Maine as a district emergency substitute and Ken Nabors as a Winslow Junior High School basketball coach. Approved as volunteers were Stephanie Nelson as a WJHS girls’ basketball coach, Mark Faust as a WJHS boys’ basketball coach, James Schwab as Winslow High School wrestling coach and Mark McGowan as WHS basketball coach. The resignation or retirement of Shelly Cunningham as Career and Technical Education director at WHS was approved effective June 8.

The board also approved donations of $92 to Jefferson School and $86 to Washington School for Sonic Night from the Arizona Restaurant Systems.

The superintendent, assistant superintendent, school principals and their designees were approved by the board as evaluators.

The board’s meeting schedule was approved as the first and third Wednesday of each month, and altered by eliminating the July 4 meeting and the Nov. 21 meeting, which fall during holiday periods.

The board adopted the intersession calendar, which is thought to make helping students who are behind in a subject catch up and lessen loss of learning skills during shorter break times. It will result in less time out of school in the summer.

Assistant Superintendent Lance Heister was authorized as the signer of the 2013 impact aid application.

Prior to the regular meeting, the board met in a special session for an executive session on student discipline. No action was taken after the board adjourned the executive session.

The board went into another executive session for legal advice after the regular meeting, with no immediate action expected.
