During last week’s Winslow City Council meeting quarterly reports were delivered from multiple city departments. In the report from Community Development Director Paul Ferris, he outlined projects that are upcoming and ongoing.

“We have been communicating with a company who intends to put a forest products industry in Winslow. The final RFP (Request For Proposal) for that will be released on Sept. 9.”

Ferris continued, “The medical marijuana facility formerly known as The Medicine Room and now known as Territory has installed a plethora of odor mitigating technology and our complaints have dropped dramatically. We had a Planning & Zoning hearing on their conditional use permit and no representatives from the neighborhood where complaints have come from showed up. The other good news at Territory is that they employ 37 people and will be expanding their operations and will employ another 10 to 15 employees.”

Ferris also updated the council on activity in the Entertainment District. “The Deanglo’s house (located at 400 W. Third St.) will be a real estate office and the two floors of the former dentist office (located at 214 N. Kinsley Ave.) will be developed. The first floor will be a restaurant and the second floor, the residence of the owners.”

According to Ferris, “The facade improvement grants provided by the city are being utilized. Four applications have been processed in the last two weeks. One for the Old Trails Museum, one for a new business across the street from the museum and one for the Kenna’s to improve Kenna’s Corner.” It was not mentioned where the other location is.

In other development news, “The Historic Preservation Commission has been working with Daniel Tafoya at Winslow High School. Tafoya’s FFA (Future Farmers of America) class has constructed a Route 66 emblem from steel that will be placed at the east end of town at the corner of Transcon Lane and Third Street. That is completed and will be mounted soon. The western gateway will also be receiving a new sign at Hipkoe Drive and Third Street. It is being designed by local artist, Jim Buckley.”

Sandra Knight, Director of the Recreation Department, gave an update on her department. “It is my observation that the reduction in fees for adult volleyball has led to more teams. Hopefully the lower fees will bring men’s basketball back as well as entice more teams to play co-ed softball. Volleyball season begins this week,” she reported.
