The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a project on Monday, March 7, to replace two bridges on Interstate 40 at State Route 77 (the Keams Canyon traffic interchange). The project is scheduled for completion in September. SR 77 will be closed where it crosses under I-40 starting March 14, and will remain closed for the duration of the project. Construction of the bridges will be accomplished in two phases. The first phase will include the demolition and construction of the right lanes of both bridges. After the right halves of the bridges have been replaced, the second phase will start with the left lanes. The roadway will be reduced to one lane in each direction on I-40 during both phases of work. The westbound on and off ramps will remain open during construction, while the eastbound ramps may be closed after construction starts. Speeds will be reduced to provide a safe work zone. Motorists who normally cross I-40 at the Keams Canyon Interchange will be directed to use the Sun Valley interchange east of the project or the East Navajo Blvd. interchange west of the project. Drivers are reminded to slow down, proceed through the work zone with caution, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel. ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. To stay up-to-date with the latest highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov or call 5-1-1.
