A professional services contract between Navajo County and former Navajo County Sheriff’s Deputy Brenda Clark was approved at the Navajo County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 12.

Deputy County Attorney Brandt Clark (no relation to Brenda Clark) told the board that normally the sheriff would approve this as part of the personnel decisions for his department, but since Brenda is his wife, it was being brought before the board so there would be no impropriety.

The contract is for consultant resources to support the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office civil deputies with the recent vacancy within that division.

“This is a six month contract with an automatic six month renewal,” said Attorney Clark. “Brenda is probably one of the best in the state at her job and she has been volunteering 10-12 hours a week to help the department.”

Clark retired from the Sheriff’s Office last July. The contract, which begins Dec. 1, will give her $3,000 a month for her services as an administrative trainer to the Sheriff’s Office.

The board also approved a request to change the boundaries between Justice of the Peace Precincts 5 and 6 for the 2018 election.

Assistant County Manager Bryan Layton said that the boundary change will be moving the area around White Mountain Road and Scott Ranch Road that includes retailers such as Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes from Precinct 6, which is the Lakeside-Pinetop precinct, to Precinct 5, the Show Low precinct. “It will decrease the travel times for law enforcement officers who need to be at court and there will be no change in the size of the court or compensation,” said Layton.

Layton then presented the board the lease agreement between the Town of Snowflake and Navajo County for the building located at 145 South Main Street in Snowflake. It was approved that the county will sign a 10-year lease agreement with the one-time payment of $150,000 to be paid during the first quarter of 2018.
