There was a large and welcoming crowd present last Friday to witness the swearing in of Arthur Gonzales as the new postmaster of the Winslow Post Office.

It was a sea of familiar faces for Gonzales, who has not only served for the past 23 years as a post office employee in Winslow, but also was born and raised in the community.

Those in the crowd of about 70 people included family, friends, co-workers and city officials. A special mention was made of his wife of 42 years, Martha, who held the Bible as Marla Lacy, the head of post office operations in Phoenix, performed the swearing-in ceremony. Regarding his wife, Gonzales noted to the crowd, “She puts up with so much from me; she’s precious, she’s my strength every day.”

Gonzales is the city’s 21st postmaster. He began his career as a temporary letter carrier during the Christmas season, which gradually led to a permanent fulltime position, with his management career beginning in 2013. As postmaster, he will oversee three clerks, four highway contractors and nine mail carriers.
