By Greg Perkins Following three periods with a total of 16 points scored, Snowflake and Show Low combined for 31 points in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter last Friday night in Show Low in what was easily the most excit-ing game of the week. Unfortunately for Lobo fans, that excitement ended with Show Low pulling out a one-point lead in the final seconds after Snowflake had made a furious rally to overcome a nine-point deficit in the final two minutes. Show Low’s Dallin Crandell scored on a 25-yard run, giving the hometown Cougars a 6-0 lead in the first period. Early in the second Dallin Merrell knotted the game on the first of his three scoring plays, this one on a 20-yard rush. Kurt Solomon’s point after gave the Lobos a 7-6 lead. With 5:59 left in the half Donny Borrego booted a 21-yard field goal and Show Low took a 9-7 lead into the halftime break. Neither team managed to score in the third quarter, but in the final 5:17 of the fourth period the fireworks began. Crandell increased Show Low’s lead with a 21-yard run and Borrego’s point after kick pushed the lead to 16-7. Snowflake quickly moved down the field, finding paydirt when Merrell connected with Braccin Tan-ner on a 55-yard catch and run. Merrell’s two point run pulled Snowflake within a single point at 16-15. Snowflake was successful on the onside kick attempt and took the lead with 55 seconds remaining on an-other Merrell to Tanner connection, this time from 39 yards out. Josh Kelly ran in the conversion, giving Snowflake what appeared to be a comfortable 23-16 lead. Not to be outdone by Snowflake’s rally, the Cou-gars came up with one of their own as Colby Maxwell connected with Trevor Solomon from five yards out with only 11 seconds left in the game making the score 23-22 in favor of Snowflake. Opting to go for the win instead of the tie, the gamble paid off for Show Low when Crandell scored on the conversion run, giving the Cougars a 24-23 win. Statistically, this game was nearly as close as the score. Show Low outgained the Lobos 343 to 299, with Snowflake having a more balanced attack. Merrill completed seven of 19 attempts for 165 yards with two scores and two picks. Tanner was the favored receiver, catching five for 143 yards. Rick Shumway made two grabs for 22 yards. On the ground Merrell was the leading rusher, carrying 24 times for 115 yards. Tanner gained nine yards on six tries, Shumway picked up nine on four attempts and Doug Brimhall rushed once, gaining one yard. Crandell had a big night for the Cougars gaining 221 yards on 25 attempts. After back-to-back losses to the two top ranked teams in Division IV, the Lobos, now 2-2, will travel to St. Johns to face another tough squad, which is now on a three-game win streak after losing its opener to Show Low a month ago. The Redskins are always tough at home and Snowflake will need to play well to avoid hav-ing a three-game skid.
