By Greg Perkins Competing at the Show Low Tournament over the weekend the Roadrunner soccer team posted a sin-gle win against a pair of losses. Both losses came on Friday against Payson and Faith Lutheran from Nevada. Saturday’s only match was a win against Grand Canyon. The Roadrunners opened against Payson, suffering a 5-0 shutout against the Longhorns. Having to fill in for starting goalie, Caleb McClellan played well, making 11 saves. Two of the five goals he allowed came off deflections, which are tough to stop. Holbrook’s second outing saw the Birds play an outstanding defensive half, according to Coach Dave Wright. “The team marked extremely well as we switched to a new formation. Faith Lutheran was a great passing team, and in the first half we came out strong and played to a 1-1 tie. Unfortunately we gave up a late goal and were down 2-1 at the half. Those late half goals are heartbreakers. In the second half we weren’t as successful at staying with our defensive assignments and it showed as they beat us 7-1,” said the coach. On Saturday the Birds faced the Phantoms from Grand Canyon. Holbrook controlled the flow of the game, but struggled to find the scoring touch until a hustling play from James Ramirez put the Birds on top 1-0. Grand Canyon knotted the score, then late in the second half Holbrook was awarded a penalty kick. Nate Tur-ley calmly placed the ball into the back of the net for the game winner. “Caleb McClellan did a fine job for us as the keeper. Andy Leon hustled the entire game, but just couldn’t find the goal. Freshmen Micah McClellan also showed real promise as a sweeper for us,” concluded Coach Wright.
