By Greg Perkins The Roadrunners broke open a 12-12 halftime tie in Window Rock, rolling over the Scouts in the second half to win their second straight game and improve to 2-2 on the season heading into their week of homecom-ing activities. Despite owning a three-year winning streak over the Scouts, playing at Window Rock is a tough task for most teams, and through the first two periods Holbrook was struggling to find an edge. Dontae Hollins scored on a 20-yard run in the first period, then hooked up with his favorite target, Sheldon Silversmith, for a 55-yard catch and run in the second quarter keeping the score knotted at 12-12 at the half. Sheldon Silversmith sparked the team in the second half, stopping a Window Rock drive with a pick which he returned 72 yards to give the Birds some much needed momentum. From that point on Holbrook pretty well controlled the game, outscoring Window Rock 32-7 in the second half to secure the 44-19 road win. Holbrook scored twice in the third, first on a Hollins’ nine-yard run then Shem Bowman busted through from four yards out and with Lanny Newton-Pender’s conversion run the Roadrunners went on top 26-12 heading into the fourth. In the final stanza the Roadrunners picked up scoring runs from Newton-Pender from three yards away, a Bowman 22-yard run and a seven-yard scoring run from Julian Garcia. Hollins needed just two completions in his three attempts to pick up 83 yards with one touchdown. Silver-smith was on the receiving end of both passes. On the ground Holbrook chewed up 222 yards with Bowman leading the way with 93 yards and two scores on 15 carries. Daniel Foster rushed four times for 39 yards. Sil-versmith gained 36 on four runs. Hollins picked up 23 on nine totes with two scores. Newton-Pender gained 16 on three runs, scoring once. Aaron Thomas gained nine yards on two runs, and Garcia rushed once for six yards and a score. Bowman led the defense with 24 takedowns and one sack. Nikko Ferniza had 12 stops, and Newton-Pender was credited with seven. Silversmith made six tackles including one sack. Clayton Hunt and Kevin Self also made six stops each. “Going into halftime we knew we had to make a change. The guys came out on fire and never looked back after that. Sheldon Silversmith provided a huge momentum swing with his long interception return. Kevin Self also stepped up with his pressure on the quarterback and the rest of the defense tightened up. On offense the holes got bigger and the backs ran harder. It is amazing what the kids can do when they believe in themselves,” noted Coach John Bokker. With Blue Ridge slated as Holbrook’s homecoming opponent this week, the Roadrunners will need all the belief they can muster. The Jackets are unbeaten, ranked number one in the state and well on their way to de-fend last year’s championship.
