By Greg Perkins After opening the volleyball season with a quality road win at Window Rock, the Lady Roadrunners have fallen on some tough times, losing their past four matches. Three of those matches were played last week, beginning Tuesday when Holbrook lost a heartbreaker in five games at Show Low. The Lady Birds dropped the first game 25-23, took the second 27-25, won the third 25-16, then fell in the fourth 25-22. In the decisive fifth game Holbrook held a 14-11 lead, but a controversial call kept the Lady Cougars alive and Show Low went on to win the match by taking game five 17-15. Tess Baldonado finished with 26 kills, 16 digs and six blocks. Teyah Goldtooth helped with 11 kills, one assist, 20 digs and six blocks. Setter Shandie Demuth lofted up 28 assists, had seven digs, three blocks and served three aces. Demi Phaturos finished with one assist and 12 digs. Dena Kinlicheenie had three assists and nine digs. Holbrook avoided the sweep by winning game three 25-17. The Lady Cats then cruised to a big lead and won the match in game four, 25-10. Kristin Baldwin of Joseph City pretty well controlled the net with her height and jumping ability as she pounded down numerous kills for the Lady Wildcats. Holbrook was led in kills by Baldonado with 12. She also had 12 digs and served a pair of aces. Samantha Smith had seven kills with one assist and nine digs. Goldtooth finished with five kills, two aces and 12 digs. Demuth ended with 26 assists and seven digs. After playing at Snowflake on Tuesday, the Lady Birds will travel to Ganado on Thursday, Sept. 13, then begin a three-match homestand with Show Low coming to Holbrook on Saturday, Sept. 15.
