By Greg Perkins What was billed as a possible prelude to a late season playoff game between Snowflake and Blue Ridge turned out to be a rout for the Yellowjackets as they cruised to a 50-0 win over the Lobos last Friday night in Snowflake. The Lobos came into this game off two impressive wins against not so impressive teams, and the Jackets had somewhat struggled in two of their three wins, although against much stiffer competition. In front of a large home field crowd, the Lobos were shut down by Blue Ridge’s defense for most of the night, finishing with only 156 total yards of offense. The Jackets offense took a while to get going, but eventu-ally piled up seven rushing scores and one field goal in the win. Blue Ridge first scored on a six-yard run for the only opening period score. In the second the Yellowjack-ets had scoring runs of five, four and three yards, taking advantage of some Snowflake miscues and showing their dominance at the line of scrimmage. A 35-yard field goal as time expired in the half left Snowflake trail-ing 30-0. Another short scoring run in the third was followed by longer touchdown runs of 25 and 35 yards in the final period. Snowflake really had some meek numbers against the vaunted Yellowjacket defense. The Lobos managed just 79 yards on the ground, led by Dallin Merrill with 56 yards on 11 attempts. Josh Kelley gained 19 on four carries, Ty Reidhead had 13 on five rushes and Doug Brimhall gained two yards on one run. Merrill completed three of 10 pass attempts for 58 yards with one interception. Reidhead was good on two of five throws for just 19 yards, also throwing a pick. Rick Shumway made two grabs for 49 yards. Doug Brimhall caught two for 21 yards and Josh Kelley had one catch for a seven yard gain. Merrill led the defense with 13 tackles. Isiah Diaz had seven stops and recovered one fumble. Braccin Tan-ner also had seven tackles. Josh Kelley made six stops and Reggie Peterson had one quarterback sack. Now the Lobos will need to quickly recover physically and mentally from the loss in order to prepare for their trip to Show Low on Friday, Sept. 14. The Cougars are 3-0 with a pair of quality road wins over Round Valley and St. Johns sandwiched around a home field shutout over Florence two weeks ago.
