A young man involved in a domestic violence incident who reportedly threatened Show Low police officers was shot at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, in Show Low. The suspect, Kent Brewer, 19, of Show Low, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:18 a.m. Approximately 20 minutes earlier, police dispatchers received a call of a domestic violence/family fight that was physical in nature at 100 W. Cooley, Apartment 117, in Show Low. Two officers initially responded and a third was added based on the information developed during the response. The first officers on scene met with the suspect’s grandfather, Gerald Shuff, 56, of Show Low, outside the residence. He indicated that his grandson, Brewer, was inside the apartment, along with two other grandchildren, ages 4 and 13. Brewer was apparently armed with a sword and made several statements about using the weapon against the police. The grandfather expressed concern for the safety of the other children in the apartment. According to a press release from the Show Low Police Department, recognizing the emergency nature of the call and the need to protect the two younger children in the residence, the officers approached the apartment, gave loud announcements at the door and entered the apartment’s living room area. Within seconds, the suspect came down the hallway with the sword raised above his shoulder and continued toward the officers. The two officers who had entered the apartment gave verbal commands to Brewer to drop the weapon as he advanced on them in the confined space. The officers were forced to use deadly force to protect themselves and Brewer was shot twice in the chest by one officer. No other shots were fired and no officer was injured during the event. Officers at the scene immediately began CPR on the suspect and, within moments, the task was turned over to the arriving paramedics. Even so, Brewer did not survive his wounds. The regional Navajo County Homicide Task Force was activated to provide the investigators and critical staffing necessary for this type of officer-involved shooting investigation. The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation, assisted by other agencies, including the SLPD and the Major Crimes Apprehension Team. Under department policy, both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. Identification of the officers was not available at press time. The medical examiner arranged an autopsy of the deceased on July 5, but the results will not be available for several weeks at the earliest.
