A hitchhiker getting a ride from a motorist got more than he expected last week when traveling through Arizona.

The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office reported that at approximately 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, Shawn Shalton, 34, of Corpus Christi, Texas, was offered a ride from a man in Flagstaff, but when they reached Joseph City, the motorist exited the freeway and told Shalton that the car was stolen and he needed to get out.

When Shelton refused to exit the vehicle, the motorist physically removed him from it. Sheltan then grabbed a hold of the car as the motorist drove off and when he could hold on no longer, let go and was run over. Shelton was able to contact emergency services and was airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The motorist is described as either a Native American or Hispanic male in his mid-30s wearing a white T-shirt and denim shorts.

The vehicle is described as a light blue Chevrolet, possibly a Corsica.
