Competing at the Snowflake Multiple, the Roadrunner wrestlers came home with four team wins in dual competitions, all against quality opponents. Holbrook beat Show Low, 48-29, Snowflake, 39-33, Payson, 48-31, and Mogollon, 45-30.
Individually, Theron Johns, RJ Alvarado, Shem Bowman and Reuben Kee all went 4-0. James Self wrestled just two matches, but also was unbeaten at 2-0. Drew Shumway was 3-1. Caleb McClellan, Shawn Gillespie, Clayton Hunt and Mathew Gishi went 2-2. Daniel Foster, Michael McMonigal and Nikko Ferniza went 1-3. Kevin Self was 0-4.
“There were some outstanding wrestlers and matches in this competition. At 132, RJ Alvarado wrestled Smiley Beacroft from Mogollon. Both were state champs last year, and RJ came out on top winning an 8-4 decision. Theron, Drew, Shem and Reuben also wrestled some outstanding matches. I am proud of how the guys performed. We beat teams that we lost to last year. We still have much improvement to make before we get to the level I know we can wrestle,” said Coach John Bokker.
In junior varsity action, Logan Tsniginnie, Lanny Newton-Pender, Courtney Alex, Xavier Marquez, Wade Biakeddy, CJ Plumb and James Sumpter all wrestled well.
Holbrook will host a re-vamped Pat Kenny tournament on Saturday, Dec. 17. The previous event was snowed out. Not as many teams will compete as in the original plan, but there will still be several teams attending the one-day tournament.
