The Lady Roadrunners have had to make some changes in their volleyball schedule due to work being done on the floor at Muñoz Gym. One of those changes had them playing in Blue Ridge last Thursday instead of today (Oct. 5). The way the match went the Lady Roadrunners may have wanted to keep that original schedule, because their trip to Yellowjacket country was not a good one.
Blue Ridge dominated Holbrook in the first game, winning it 25-8. The second game didn’t go much better as the Lady Jackets prevailed 25-13. The Lady Roadrunners played better in the third game, but still fell short 25-22 and fell to 5-6 in power point matches.
Kellin Bakurza had six assists and seven digs. Corazon Alvarado finished with three kills and five digs. Bethany Baldwin added two kills, two digs and a block. Shantina Kinlicheenie added a kill, seven assists, 14 digs and a block. Janecia Nez finished with two kills and five digs. Tess Baldonado added five kills and three digs. Maria Garcia had a kill and four digs. Samantha Smith finished with a kill and six digs. Aaren LaRose had 10 digs. Shandie Demuth added a kill. Tamika Baldwin ended the match with four digs.
Heading into this week’s action the Lady Roadrunners have dropped to 15th in power point rankings in Division IV and will need to finish in the top 16 to qualify for the state tournament. They do have a favorable schedule down the stretch. After hosting a very good Mogollon team on Tuesday, they will travel to Window Rock on Thursday, Oct. 6. After a week off for fall break, they will host Joseph City on Tuesday, Oct. 18. St. Johns, Winslow and Ganado finish out Holbrook’s regular season schedule. The Lady Birds will more than likely need to win at least two or three matches the rest of the way to reach the Division IV state tournament.
